'3D product configurator' and '3D product visualizer' get used interchangeably, and vendors don't help. They solve different problems. If you sell home products online, picking the wrong one means paying for 3D that doesn't move conversion.
The short answer
A 3D product configurator lets the shopper change the product: fabric, finish, modules, legs. A room visualizer lets the shopper change the context: their own room, at true scale, in their light. Configurators earn their keep when your products have many combinations; room visualizers earn theirs when the reason shoppers hesitate is fit. For most furniture, rug, wallpaper and décor retailers, fit is the blocker.
| 3D product configurator | Room visualizer | |
|---|---|---|
| What the shopper changes | The product: fabric, finish, modules, legs | The context: their own room, at true scale, in their light |
| Starts from | One hero product on a neutral background | One photo of the shopper's room |
| Answers | Which configuration? | Will it fit and look right in my room? |
| Best for | Made-to-order upholstery, B2B dealer sales, many material combinations | Standard catalogue products where fit is the blocker |
| 3D assets | CAD-accurate assets for every frame and material | Generated from the product photography you already have |
| Time to live and pricing | A production project measured in months, priced on quote | Live within 2 weeks from connecting Shopify; pricing is published |
What a 3D product configurator does
A configurator renders one hero product on a neutral background and exposes its options. Change the upholstery, swap the arm style, add a chaise, and the model updates. Platforms such as Cylindo and Threekit are built around this, often for manufacturers whose catalogue is really a small number of frames with hundreds of material combinations. It's excellent for made-to-order upholstery and for B2B dealer sales. It does not tell the shopper whether the sofa fits between the window and the bookshelf.
What a room visualizer does
A room visualizer starts from the shopper's space. Imersian's Room Visualizer takes one photo of the room, reconstructs floor, walls, scale and ambient light with Spatial AI, and places the product at 1:1 size in that photo. Rugs go under the existing sofa; a floor lamp sits on the floor, not floating above it. Variants still work, but they are the size and colour options already in your Shopify catalogue, swapped live in the room rather than in a dropdown. For furniture stores, see the furniture visualizer.
A simple way to decide
| Shoppers' main objection | Your products | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Which configuration? | 50+ material combinations | A configurator |
| Will it fit or look right in my room? | Standard catalogue products | A room visualizer |
| Both | Configurable upholstery sold to consumers | Both, with the visualizer where the configured product ends up |
Cost and time to live
Configurators usually require CAD-accurate 3D assets for every frame and material, which is a production project measured in months and priced on quote. Room visualizers built for retail generate 3D models from the product photography you already have; Imersian's AI 3D Creator does this with a QA pass by our team, and you're live within 2 weeks from connecting your Shopify store. Pricing is on our pricing page.
Every product gets a 3D model, with no 3D work on your side. Models for furniture and home decor use credits; models for everything else are free. The Room Visualizer is a 12-month term billed monthly, with a one-off onboarding fee. Current terms are on the pricing page.
What the results look like
Because a room visualizer addresses the fit objection, its effect shows up in conversion and returns rather than in configuration depth. The average Visualizer session runs 5+ minutes across retailers, and about two in three shoppers use their own room photo. If a vendor quotes a platform-wide percentage, ask how it was measured.
The honest comparison
If you want to see how Imersian sits next to configurator-led platforms feature by feature, we keep fair, sourced pages for Cylindo and the room-visualizer incumbents Roomvo and Wizart, including where each is the better choice.
