Imersian makes one of the tools on this list. We rank it first for the job most furniture retailers ask us about, and we say plainly where another tool is the better choice. Every entry is assessed on the same criteria, using facts from each vendor's own pages or Shopify App Store listing, checked on 4 November 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say "not published".

The short answer

If you're a furniture retailer who wants shoppers to see your products in their own room, without producing 3D files yourself, we recommend Imersian. You send the product photos you already have, Imersian builds the 3D models, and you go live within 2 weeks. Plans start at US$348 a month. Imersian is a room visualizer, not a configurator.

If you sell made-to-order furniture and need shoppers to build a product option by option, choose a 3D product configurator. Cylindo is the furniture specialist, with photoreal studio imagery and configurators at catalogue scale. Threekit suits manufacturers with complex rules and quoting (CPQ). Zakeke is the self-serve Shopify option with published prices. 3D Cloud by Marxent serves large furniture and home-improvement chains with room planners and configurators. Shopify's built-in 3D and AR is enough if you already have 3D files for a few products.

How we evaluated

"3D product visualization" covers four different jobs, and most tools do one or two of them well. We scored each tool on the same eight points:

  • What it does: 3D configurator, 3D viewer, AR, room visualizer, or a mix.
  • How 3D models are made: you supply CAD or 3D files, the vendor models them, or AI builds them from photos.
  • Time to live: what the vendor publishes about go-live.
  • Own-room placement: can shoppers place the product in a photo of their own room?
  • AR: can shoppers view the product through their phone camera?
  • Shopify fit: App Store app, theme code, or no Shopify route published.
  • Pricing model: the public "from" price, or quote-based / not published.
  • Best for: the retailer each tool suits best.

We did not install every competitor on a test store, and we did not rate competitors' render quality. Facts come from vendor pages and App Store listings only. App Store prices are monthly list prices before annual discounts. If something here is out of date, email us and we'll correct it.

Where the 3D models come from, and how each fits Shopify.

1. Imersian: best for 3D furniture in the shopper's own room, with no 3D work

Imersian is a room visualizer and AI shopping assistant for home retailers. Shoppers upload a photo of their room and place your furniture, rugs and decor in it at true scale, then view it in AR. It's built for retailers who have product photos but no 3D pipeline.

  • What it does: a room visualizer with AR. It is not a configurator: shoppers place and swap your products, rather than building one option by option. See the Visualizer.
  • How 3D models are made: you supply the product photos you already have and Imersian builds the 3D models with its AI 3D Creator, so there is no 3D work on your side. Rug, flooring, wallpaper, wall art and other flat or surface product models are free; furniture and home decor models use credits.
  • Time to live: retailers go live within 2 weeks.
  • Own-room placement: yes. Shoppers place products in a photo of their own room at true scale, and Magic Eraser removes furniture they want out of the picture.
  • AR: yes. Shoppers scan a QR code to open their design in AR on their phone.
  • Shopify fit: a native Shopify app. Tagged products sync every 24 hours.
  • Pricing: from US$348 a month, on a 12-month term, billed monthly, plus a one-off onboarding fee. You can start with free credits and a demo of up to 10 of your own products. See pricing.
  • Best for: furniture and home retailers who want shoppers to see products in their own room and don't have 3D files.

Strengths: no 3D files or CAD needed, a set-up-for-you rollout, and 3D placement in the shopper's own room rather than a generic scene. Shoppers spend real time with it: Capel Rugs shoppers average 6.4 minutes in the visualizer, and All Modern Rugs sees 5-minute sessions with 13 interactions per visit. Imersian is rated 5.0 on the Shopify App Store.

Trade-offs: no option-by-option configurator, so it isn't the right tool for made-to-order sectionals with thousands of fabric and layout combinations. It doesn't produce studio-grade catalogue imagery the way Cylindo does. And it costs more than Shopify's free 3D media. We explain the 3D-versus-AI-image choice in 3D vs AI room visualizer.

2. Cylindo: best for photoreal furniture imagery and configurators at scale

Cylindo is a long-established 3D platform built for furniture brands. Its core is a 3D master asset of each product, which drives 360° viewers, packshots, dimension shots, web AR and lifestyle imagery from one source.

  • What it does: 3D viewer, web AR and PDP imagery on the core platform, plus add-on bundles for lifestyle imagery (AI scenes and a Studio scene builder) and 3D design (the Modular Designer configurator for sectionals, shelving and dining sets).
  • How 3D models are made: three routes: Cylindo-made master assets for complex configurable products, AI master assets created from reference images, or your existing 3D files. Cylindo's specialists structure your photography, dimensions, configurations and finishes.
  • Time to live: not published. Cylindo says a project manager owns the launch plan from kickoff to go-live.
  • Own-room placement: Cylindo lists Stager, where shoppers upload a photo of their room and AI clears the existing furniture, as "coming soon". Floor Planner is listed for 2026.
  • AR: yes. Web AR runs in Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android, opened by QR code.
  • Shopify fit: no Shopify App Store app found. Cylindo's developer guide adds its viewer to a Shopify theme with Liquid code.
  • Pricing: quote-based. Cylindo prices to your catalogue size and sales channels.
  • Best for: furniture brands with large, configurable catalogues that want photoreal imagery and configurators from one asset.

Strengths: photoreal studio and lifestyle imagery from one 3D asset, configurators built for made-to-order furniture, and a customer list of well-known furniture brands, including Room and Board and Joybird.

Trade-offs: no public price, and own-room placement isn't live yet. Shopify setup is theme code rather than an app. We compare the two in detail in Imersian vs Cylindo.

3. Threekit: best for complex configurators and enterprise CPQ

Threekit now presents itself as AI-native configure-price-quote (CPQ) software for manufacturers. It configures complex products, prices the exact build and hands off orders to ERP and CRM systems, with 3D, AR and photoreal 2D imagery as part of the platform.

  • What it does: 3D product configuration with pricing and quoting, a 3D player, AR, and Virtual Photographer for photorealistic 2D images.
  • How 3D models are made: not published. Threekit says you own your assets.
  • Time to live: not published. Threekit says go-live depends on the scope and scale of the visuals.
  • Own-room placement: not published.
  • AR: yes, listed as a core feature.
  • Shopify fit: a Shopify app, "Threekit 3D Configuration & AR", for existing Threekit customers or stores given Threekit assets. Threekit's headline integrations are Salesforce, SAP, Oracle ERP Cloud and HubSpot.
  • Pricing: quote-based, depending on the number of products, the visuals and the timeline.
  • Best for: manufacturers with complex product rules and a sales or dealer quoting process. Its client logos include office-furniture makers Steelcase and Teknion.

Strengths: deep configuration logic that keeps invalid options out, pricing and quoting built in, and enterprise system integrations.

Trade-offs: furniture retail isn't among the industries Threekit lists, there's no public price, and the Shopify app needs an existing Threekit account. See Imersian vs Threekit.

4. Zakeke: best self-serve 3D configurator for Shopify

Zakeke is a 2D and 3D product customizer and configurator with plugins for Shopify and other ecommerce platforms. It's widely used for personalised products, and it offers furniture configurators.

  • What it does: a 3D configurator with live preview on every plan, a product customizer (text, photos, colours, templates), and a 3D asset library with an AR viewer.
  • How 3D models are made: Zakeke's furniture pages say you need 3D models, and Zakeke can create them for you. Models aren't included in the subscription.
  • Time to live: not published. Every paid plan has a 14-day free trial.
  • Own-room placement: not published.
  • AR: yes, through its AR viewer.
  • Shopify fit: a Shopify App Store app, launched in 2017 and rated 4.5 from 100 reviews.
  • Pricing: Starter about US$69.90 a month (up to 10 products), Grow about US$129.90 (50 products) and Scale about US$299.90 (100 products), each plus a transaction fee on products sold through Zakeke. Paying yearly saves 15%.
  • Best for: Shopify stores that want a configurator they can set up themselves, for a small number of configurable products.

Strengths: published prices, a free trial, a long track record on the Shopify App Store, and print-ready output files for made-to-order production.

Trade-offs: you need 3D models first, product limits are low on the entry plans, and fees scale with sales. See how Imersian compares.

5. 3D Cloud by Marxent: best for large furniture chains wanting room planners

3D Cloud by Marxent (formerly Marxent) builds 3D room planners, product configurators and web AR for furniture and home-improvement retailers. It serves large chains, and names Lowe's, Ashley HomeStore and John Lewis as customers.

  • What it does: 3D room planner apps, sectional and modular configurators, web AR, product renders, 3D room renders and digital asset management.
  • How 3D models are made: 3D Cloud's own 3D modeling services. What the retailer supplies isn't published.
  • Time to live: the homepage says 8 to 10 weeks. Other sections say 10 to 12 weeks for the sectional configurator.
  • Own-room placement: not published. Its room planner lets shoppers design a whole room in 3D in the browser and add it to cart.
  • AR: yes. App-free web AR from product pages, including several products in one scene.
  • Shopify fit: not published.
  • Pricing: not published.
  • Best for: large furniture and home-improvement retailers that want shoppers to plan full rooms in 3D.

Strengths: full-room planning with true-to-scale products and whole-room add-to-cart, configurators for sectionals, and experience with some of the largest home retailers.

Trade-offs: no public price, a launch measured in weeks to months, and no published Shopify route.

6. Shopify 3D and AR: best if you already have 3D files

Shopify lets you add 3D models to product pages as media. On a supported theme, shoppers can spin the model and view it in AR through their phone camera.

  • What it does: a 3D viewer and AR on the product page.
  • How 3D models are made: you supply GLB or USDZ files, up to 500 MB each. Shopify points you to a Shopify Partner or a 3D scanner.
  • Time to live: depends on producing the 3D files.
  • Own-room placement: no. Shoppers use the live camera instead of a room photo.
  • AR: yes. Shopify creates GLB and USDZ versions so AR works on iOS and Android.
  • Shopify fit: built in. It needs a theme that supports 3D media, which includes all Shopify-built Online Store 2.0 themes and Horizon.
  • Pricing: Shopify lists no separate charge. The cost is creating the models.
  • Best for: stores that already have 3D files, or only a few hero products.

Strengths: no extra app, native to your theme, and files over 15 MB are optimised automatically.

Trade-offs: you need a 3D file for every product, and there's no configurator or own-room photo placement.
