Image Guidelines for 3D Visualisation in Shopify

Learn the best image and model requirements for Imersian’s 3D visualisation and AR experiences on Shopify. Includes format, size, lighting, and camera angle recommendations.

This guide covers image requirements, alt tag usage, variant best practices, and how to handle bulk uploads or existing 3D assets.

Better images = better results. Simple.

✅ What To Do

For Imersian to create 3D models, your products need specific types of images:

1. Use a clean, straight-on perspective.

Start with at least one clear image of the product, photographed front-on (rugs, wall art) or from a natural angle (furniture). The entire product should be visible in the image

Rugs: Top-down view

Wall Art: Front View

Furniture Products: slight angled view

2. White background, always.

Your image should be isolated on a white or solid neutral background (no wood floors, rugs, or moody walls, please). This helps us generate clean and accurate 3D models.

3. One product per image.

No group shots. No props. No distractions. The product should be the hero—ideally cropped with just a bit of shadow underneath, if any.

4. Good lighting matters.

Make sure your images are sharp, well-lit, and not overexposed or dark. Natural light or soft studio lighting is best.

5. Do it for every variant.

Selling multiple colours, patterns, or finishes? We need an image for each variant.

What Not To Do

  • No lifestyle shots (save those for your lookbook)

  • No cut-off edges or extreme angles or fisheye lens

  • No watermarks, logos, or added graphics

  • No inconsistent image sizes (keep them uniform across variants)

FAQ

I'm having colour problems / variant looks off

If one of your variants looks off or blends in with another, chances are:

  • The variant image isn’t properly linked to the right colour

  • All variants share the same image

  • The SKU isn't unique per variant

How to Fix It

  • Assign one image per variant that clearly shows the colour

  • Use unique model for every variant (even if it’s just colour)

  • Alt tag assigned to the correct variant image

  • Image with Alt tag should be the primary image for the variant.

Examples:

  • "My navy looks black" → Image lighting too dark

  • "All colours look the same" → Same image assigned to every variant

  • "One colour isn’t showing" → Missing SKU or alt tag

Why Do White Products Look Grey?

Short answer? AI struggles with flat white.
Long answer? Pure white often lacks texture or contrast, making it tricky for the model to understand what it’s seeing.

Fix it with:

  • Higher contrast images

  • Shadow or texture detail

  • A second photo showing the material close-up
